Choose the Best Way to Cure Hernia

laparoscopic surgery for hernia

The world is always evolving, with this, our medical science has reached another level of development with inventions of new types of surgery that are more beneficial for human beings. Laparoscopic surgery is one of them that helps a human to recover quickly. And when it comes to a hernia operation, the best way to perform it is laparoscopic surgery for hernia.

What is hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal organ or other parts of the body bulges through a weak spot in the tissue or muscle. Generally, a hernia happens within the abdominal cavity.

Types of hernia

A person can experience several types of hernia. The most common types of hernias are femoral hernia, inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, and hiatal hernia.

• Femoral hernia- Mainly older women suffer from Femoral hernia. It is a little bit less common than an inguinal hernia. When a part of the intestine or fatty tissue swells out into the groin, that is called a femoral hernia.

• Inguinal hernia- It is the most common type of hernia among all. often men get affected by inguinal hernia than women. In a man’s body, the inguinal canal works as a passageway for the blood vessels and spermatic cord to the testicles. In the case o women, the round ligament that works as a supporter for the womb is being contained in the inguinal canal. When a fatty tissue bulges into the groin at the top of the inner thigh, known as inguinal hernia.

• Umbilical hernia- In the case of an umbilical hernia, the part of the intestine or fatty tissue pokes through the abdomen that is close to the navel.

• Hiatal hernia- Hiatal hernia is known as upper gi hernia. When the upper part of the stomach bulges up through a large muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen (diaphragm), called a hiatal hernia.
These four are the most common types of hernia. There are some more types of hernia, such as incisional hernia, epigastric hernia, Spigelian hernia, diaphragmatic hernia, etc.

What is laparoscopic surgery?

As medical science is evolving day by day, new types of surgeries have been invented. Laparoscopic surgery is one of them. Laparoscopic surgery allows surgeons to attend critical surgeries without making a big cut on the body. It is also known as keyhole surgery. This surgery is performed with a long and thin instrument with an attached high-resolution camera and a light at the front called a laparoscope. The high-resolution camera helps surgeons to see the images of the organs inside the abdomen through a monitor. With the help of this instrument, surgeons can be able to perform critical surgeries through small incisions.

The best way to operate a hernia

There are several ways to treat a hernia. When it comes to operating, laparoscopic surgery for hernia is the best option.
The surgeon makes three incisions smaller than half-inch in the lower part of the abdomen. Through these incisions, a laparoscope with a high-resolution camera and light is inserted to visualize the hernia in the monitor. After detecting the hernia defect, the surgeon removes the hernia sac from the defect in the abdominal wall and covers the defect with prosthetic mesh. After this procedure, the incisions are covered with sutures.

Benefits of laparoscopic surgery

Why should one choose laparoscopic surgery over traditional open surgery? The answer hides in the benefits of laparoscopic surgery for a hernia. In the case of hernia operation, open surgeries have a risk of huge blood loss. As laparoscopic surgeries are performed through small incisions, they lower the risk of blood loss. The same thing goes for the scars too. After open surgery it leaves a huge scar on the patient's body, on the other hand, laparoscopic surgery just leaves a small scar. These two are the main advantages of keyhole surgery. One more important thing is post-operative pain. Laparoscopic surgery causes less pain and also takes very little time to recover after the operation than open surgery. The risk of being infected also reduces with laparoscopic surgery.

SELSMA (Society of Endoscopic Laparoscopic Surgery Malaysia) was formed to bring together surgeons worldwide and Malaysia specifically. With a focus on Endoscopic-Laparoscopic techniques, SELSMA functions as a platform for surgeons with a special interest in this field to congregate their ideas, learn new techniques and educate others. SELSMA is also part of a bigger society, ELSA, known as the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia. SELSMA takes pride in its members who are the crème de la crème from various surgical subspecialties. Besides being a platform for surgeons to come together, SELSMA also welcomes Medical officers, Medical students, and Allied health to actively participate in their host of activities.
