Prevent and Cure Upper GI Hernia with Modern Medical Science

Hiatal hernia, also known as upper GI hernia is a health condition that occurs when the stomach’s upper part bulges through a large muscle and separates the chest and abdomen. No matter what age you are in, upper GI hernia occurs in people of any age or gender. But mostly it develops in the age group of 50 and more than that. Also, smokers and people suffering from obesity have the risk to develop upper GI hernia.

Causes and Symptoms of Upper GI Hernia

The most common reason to develop upper GI hernia is the increase of pressure in the abdominal cavity that holds organs such as kidney, gallbladder, the lower part of the esophagus, liver, colon, rectum, small intestine, etc. There are several reasons for increasing pressure in the abdominal cavity including, physical strain, heavy lifting, coughing, vomiting, straining during bowel movements, and many more. During pregnancy, women can experience upper gi hernia. Upper GI hernia or hiatal hernia has more causes including injury to the area, or being born with a larger hiatal opening, etc

People suffering from upper GI hernias mostly cannot notice any visible symptoms. But still, there are some common symptoms. They are chest or belly pain, upset stomach, etc. If a person with an upper GI hernia feels these problems, should immediately consult the doctor. Followings are the most common symptoms of hiatal hernia.

  • Upset stomach
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Bloating
  • Burping
  • Backflow of liquid or food into the mouth from the stomach
  • Constipation A burning
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Vomiting
  • feeling at the bulge
  • Pain and swelling around the testicles
  • Shooting pain

Types of upper GI hernia

Generally, there are two types of upper GI hernia

  •   Sliding upper GI hernia- Sliding upper GI hernia is the most common one that takes place when the stomach and the esophagus slide out from the chest through the hiatus. Generally, this kind of upper GI hernia does not have any symptoms or it doesn’t require any treatment.

  • Fixed upper GI hernia- Fixed upper GI hernia, also known as para esophagus hernia isn’t common as sliding hernia. It is the most dangerous one. It increases the risk of blood flow to the stomach. Para esophagus hernia requires proper treatment otherwise it may lead to serious damage and the stomach could become blocked.

Prevent Upper GI Hernia by Changing Lifestyle

Prevention is always better than cure. A slight change in Lifestyle can help to prevent upper GI hernia.

  • Consult your doctor to choose the right diet chart. Eat slowly and take smaller meals. It is better to take four to five small meals per day.
  • Most importantly avoid oily, fatty, and fried foods, vinegar, chocolate, and caffeine.
  • Avoid exercising at least for three to four hours after eating.
  • Lift the head of the bed 6 inches.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes that put pressure on the belly.
  • Lose extra weight.
  • Quit smoking and drinking alcohol. Smoking is an intense burn generator for the heart.

The Best Way to Operate Upper GI Hernia

People, who are suffering from sliding upper GI hernia, generally don’t feel any symptoms. It can be cured by prescribed medicines. But a fixed upper GI hernia can be dangerous for human beings. In this case, sometimes doctors suggest surgery to cure hernia.

In this evolving world, our medical science has reached another level of development by the inventions of new types of surgery that are more beneficial for human beings. Laparoscopic surgery is one of them which is considered the best way to cure hernia. Laparoscopic surgery is a modern procedure to attend critical surgeries by using modern instruments through small incisions. Laparoscopic upper GI hernia surgery is less painful than open surgeries and has less risk of blood loss.

SELSMA (Society of Endoscopic Laparoscopic Surgery Malaysia) was formed to bring together surgeons worldwide and Malaysia specifically. With a focus on Endoscopic-Laparoscopic techniques, SELSMA functions as a platform for surgeons with a special interest in this field to congregate their ideas, learn new techniques and educate others. SELSMA is also part of a bigger society, ELSA, known as the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia. SELSMA takes pride in its members who are the crème de la crème from various surgical subspecialties. Besides being a platform for surgeons to come together, SELSMA also welcomes Medical officers, Medical students, and Allied health to actively participate in their host of activities.
