How the surgery is done

Surgery using a laparoscope is the widely accepted way to remove the gallbladder. A laparoscope is a thin, lighted tube that helps the doctor see inside your belly. The removal surgery is done while you are under general anesthesia so you will be asleep and pain-free. It is done the following way:

The surgeon brings 3 to 4 small cuts in your belly.

The laparoscope and other medical equipment are inserted through cuts

Gas is pumped into the abdomen to expand the space. This provides the surgeon with more room to see and work.

The gallbladder is then removed by operating using the laparoscope and other medical equipment.

An x-ray which is specifically called a cholangiogram can be done during the surgery. To do this test, dye is injected into the common bile duct and an x-ray image is taken. The dye helps find possible stones that may be outside your gallbladder.

If other stones are found, the surgeon may remove them with a special instrument.

Sometimes a laparoscopy is not enough to safely take out the gallbladder. In this case, the surgeon will perform open surgery, in which a larger cut is made.
